South Africa can be visited all year, and its seasons are the reverse of India's. Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route are at their best from October to March, with warm, dry summer days. May to September is the dry winter, when the bush thins out and game viewing in Kruger is at its best. Whale season along the Cape coast runs from about June to November.
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, with summer highs of around 25°C to 28°C and cool, rainy winters. Johannesburg and Kruger have warm, wet summers with afternoon thunderstorms and dry, sunny winters, when nights on the Highveld around Johannesburg can drop close to freezing.
Peak Season: October to March for Cape Town and the Garden Route, with December and January the busiest, and June to September for safaris in Kruger.
Off-Peak Season: May to August in Cape Town, when cooler, wetter weather brings fewer crowds and better hotel offers, though it is an excellent time for safaris and whale watching.
South African food reflects its many cultures. Try Cape Malay bobotie, Durban's famous bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf filled with curry, created by the city's Indian community), boerewors sausage from a braai (barbecue) and warm malva pudding. Indian and vegetarian restaurants are easy to find in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
South Africa's main international gateways are O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport, with King Shaka International Airport serving Durban. Short domestic flights make it easy to combine Cape Town, the Garden Route and Kruger in one trip.
